The Varshik Shradh Pooja is performed annually to honor and pay homage to departed ancestors. It is a significant ritual in Hinduism, usually observed during the Pitru Paksha (Shradh period), but it can be done on the death anniversary (tithi) as well. Below is the list of samagri (materials) required for the Varshik Shradh Pooja:

Varshik Shradh Pooja Samagri:

  1. Kusha Grass (Darbha) – Sacred grass used for rituals.
  2. Black Sesame Seeds (Til) – To be offered during rituals.
  3. Pitra Tarpan Vessel – A special vessel to offer water to ancestors.
  4. Yajnopavita (Sacred Thread) – Worn during the pooja.
  5. White Cloth – For offerings or to be placed as a covering.
  6. Pind Daan Ingredients:
    • Cooked Rice (Pind) – Balls made from cooked rice, offered as Pindas to the ancestors.
    • Barley Flour – Mixed with the rice for making Pindas.
    • Black Sesame Seeds – Added to the Pindas.
    • Ghee (Clarified Butter) – Used in making Pindas and for offerings.
  7. Tulsi Leaves – Added to the Pindas for sanctity.
  8. Cow’s Milk – For offering during the Pooja.
  9. Honey – For offerings.
  10. Ganga Jal (Holy Water from River Ganga) – Used for purification and offerings.
  11. Roli and Chandan (Red Kumkum and Sandalwood Paste) – For tilak and offering.
  12. Flowers (Fresh) – Preferably white, for offering to the ancestors.
  13. Fruits – To offer to the ancestors.
  14. Incense Sticks (Dhoop) – To create a sacred atmosphere.
  15. Camphor (Kapoor) – Used during aarti and for purification.
  16. Diya (Oil Lamp) – Lit throughout the ritual.
  17. Cotton Wicks – For lighting the diya.
  18. Panchpatra and Pali – Small vessels for offering water.
  19. Bhog (Food Offerings) – Specially prepared satvik food (without onion and garlic), to offer as a meal to the ancestors.
  20. Pooja Thali – For keeping the items organized during the ceremony.
  21. Betel Leaves and Betel Nuts – Offered during the ritual.
  22. Dakshina (Coins or money) – To be offered along with the pooja, often given to Brahmins or priests.
  23. Cow's Ghee and Rice Flour – For havan if included.
  24. Brahmin Bhoj (Feeding Brahmins) – Food items like dal, rice, vegetables, roti, etc., for offering to Brahmins after the pooja (optional but considered highly auspicious).
